Anson aea07e7f95 Merge branch 'phase-1-revival' into 'master'
Phase 1 Revival: Update dependencies, fix bugs, add tests

See merge request simple-stock-bots/simple-stock-bot!67
2026-03-23 19:05:20 -07:00
Anson Biggs 56d341218e Upgrade test suite to use PTB testing utilities
- Rewrite tests/test_telegram_handlers.py to use real PTB objects
  (User, Chat, InlineQuery, PreCheckoutQuery, SuccessfulPayment)
- Use MagicMock for Message objects since PTB's Message is frozen
and doesn't allow setting attributes like reply_text
- Add factory functions (make_user, make_chat, make_mock_message,
  make_command_update, make_inline_query_update, etc.) for creating
  realistic test objects
- Test all handlers: /start, /help, /license, /status, /donate,
  /intra, /chart, /trending, /random, symbol_detect, symbol_detect_image,
  inline_query, error handler, precheckout_callback, successful_payment
- Add new test_telegram_application.py with integration-level tests
that process mock updates through actual handler functions
- Test concurrent update processing and error scenarios
- 227 total tests passing (64 new PTB-based tests)

Anson Biggs d592674082 Add comprehensive test suite with 174 tests
Test categories:
- Unit tests for Symbol/Stock/Coin class construction, repr, str, hash
- Router regex parsing tests (stock/crypto patterns, edge cases)
- Router.find_symbols with mocked MarketData and cg_Crypto
- Router.trending_decay math tests
- Router.price_reply dispatching tests
- MarketData.price_reply formatting (up/down/flat/error/None cases)
- MarketData.intra_reply and chart_reply DataFrame construction
- cg_Crypto.price_reply formatting tests
- cg_Crypto retry/backoff behavior on 429s
- rate_limited decorator timing and instance independence
- Telegram bot command handler tests (mocked updates)
- Integration tests for full message flows
- Edge case tests (empty messages, API errors, malformed responses)
- Unicode and long input handling tests

Uses pytest with fixtures, conftest.py, and parametrize where appropriate.
All external API calls are mocked with unittest.mock.

title: "Simple Bot End-of-Life"
date: 2024-05-12
tags: [Simple Stock Bot, Introduction, Telegram, Discord, Financial Insights]
authors: [Anson]
description: >
Simple Stock Bot is being sunset.

## What is Simple Stock Bot?
For full details see my full blog post: [https://notes.ansonbiggs.com/simple-stock-bot-end-of-life/](https://notes.ansonbiggs.com/simple-stock-bot-end-of-life/)
I am shutting down Simple Stock Bot, a popular Telegram and Discord bot that provided live stock and cryptocurrency market data. The bot was created in 2018 after my group chat lost access to the Google Allo, which had integrated market data. The bot grew to 15,000 monthly active users, but maintaining the service has become challenging due to increasing data costs and changes to the Discord API. I really appreciate the community and everyone that has donated along the way, this has been a seriously great ride. The bot will soon no longer function on Telegram and Discord.
